Bristol’s Watershed is screening a season of rarely seen Chinese films this month as part of the most extensive presentation of Chinese cinema ever staged in the UK.
Chinese cinema is one of the world’s largest – yet least known – film cultures. Watershed’s unprecedented season offers a rare chance to discover a selection of the history of an entire nation in film and discover stunning classics from the Golden Age of the 1930s and 1940s (Song at Midnight, Spring in A Small Town), films from after the establishment of the Peoples’ Republic of China in 1949 (Red Detachment of Women), to the rise of flying fists and blades in genre films (The Banquet), new post-Cultural Revolution voices (One and Eight, Red Sorghum) and titles from contemporary masters (Still Life).
