Bristol property development firm Baylis Estates, best known for its Cribbs Causeway retail and leisure destination, has made two senior appointments as it continues to build its portfolio of largescale commercial property schemes.

Josh Roberts has joined the firm as property director while Elfyn Haycock has become its new development director.

Josh has more than 32 years’ experience in the South West property market having started his career with King Sturge (now JLL) before moving into the development sector.

He was most recently a founder shareholder of Cubex Land, the Bristol-based developer behind the Finzels Reach scheme on the city’s former Courage Brewery site.

He brings with him wide-ranging knowledge and successful delivery of multi-sector commercial and mixed-use schemes, including speculative as well as pre-let and forward-funded projects.

He has a strong focus on maximising development potential from existing assets alongside identifying, securing and delivering new schemes.

Elfyn heads up project delivery at Baylis Estates as well as working with managing director David Mace and Josh to appraise and secure new development opportunities.

Over his career he has delivered developments worth around £500m across retail, mixed-use, office, student, residential and industrial sectors, for developers, funds and institutions.

He previously worked at JLL, where his most recently completed projects included two multi-million pound build-to-rent and student accommodation schemes.

Baylis Estates managing director David Mace said this was an important time for development in the region.

“As a company we’ve helped shape some of the most significant commercial developments in the region, most notably the Mall at Cribbs Causeway,” he said.

“As we all look forward to a rebounding of the economy over coming months, Josh and Elfyn will be playing an important part in the development of commercial, retail and leisure opportunities contributing to the vitality of the South West.”

Baylis Estates, which was founded by Jack Baylis, has its background in the 1960s housing boom when it built thousands of homes in Kingswood, Keynsham and Patchway.

It later moved into commercial development, where its first major project was 100,000 sq ft-plus of warehousing at Patchway Trading Estate.

Since then it has been responsible for nearly 2m sq ft of retail, leisure, office, warehousing and motor trade developments throughout the South West, including Cribbs Causeway, where it co-owns the flagship 800,000 sq ft The Mall retail scheme, pictured top, and 145,000 sq ft The Venue leisure park, pictured above, with M&G Real Estate.

It is currently developing Armstrong Business Park in Yate and South Point Business Park in Chippenham.
