Training hard to go above and beyond – and to Paris – for Bristol’s Golden Gift Appeal

With just over three weeks until they set off on their gruelling 430km cycle trek to Paris, the 70-strong Above & Beyond fundraising team are training hard to ensure they hit their £100,000 target.

The intrepid cyclists, who will set off on May 1 and arrive at the foot of the Eiffel Tower four days later, include notable Bristol business and creative industry figures as well as medics and managers from the city’s hospitals.

They aim to bring in £100,000 for charity Above & Beyond’s Golden Gift Appeal – the high-profile appeal to raise a total of £6m for projects that take Bristol’s main hospitals above and beyond what the NHS can provide, transforming them for generations to come.

The money raised from the Bristol to Paris Cycle Challenge will fund a new individual room in the Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI), giving younger patients with life-limiting cystic fibrosis greater privacy and dignity in care, with the space needed for vital physiotherapy equipment and for loved ones to stay close by

Among those taking part will be Destination Bristol chief executive John Hirst, Jonnie Galvin-Wright of Stuff Advertising and Sue Atkinson of Ardent Communications. The medics include senior doctors and managers from University Hospitals Bristol such as divisional director of diagnostics and therapy Fiona Jones, consultant in hepatology Jim Portal and paediatric ED (emergency department) consultant Anne Frampton.

Bristol Business News will follow the team’s progress with regular updates and a name check for any businesses pledging their support.
