Bristol-based precision measurement firm Third Dimension, which works with manufacturers such as Airbus and Rolls-Royce to help them reach the highest quality and safety standards, has created a new team to deepen its technical capabilities.

The application engineering team will also strengthen the firm’s customer support resource and widen its global reach.

Third Dimension, which is based in Filton, makes handheld and robot-deployed non-contact gauging systems which are sold across the world to major manufacturers.

The equipment helps these firms work to tighter tolerances, carry out quality checks quickly and keep an audit trail on all measurements, providing the assurance companies need to advance manufacturing.

As well as Airbus and Rolls-Royce – both of which have major plants at Filton – Third Dimension also supplies global giants Lockheed Martin, GE, Volvo and Samsung.

Its three new specialist engineers making up the application engineering team will bolster the firm’s technical expertise and will have responsibility for providing pre-sale and post-sale support for customers as well as working with distributors to enhance existing technical support.

They will also work closely with customers to understand their key challenges, in a move that will strengthen the company’s knowledge of changing demand and requirements in the automotive, aerospace, energy, and consumer goods manufacturing industries.

The new recruits are Gerard Tamayo, Daniel Sherwood and Jake Tivey.

Gerard has more than a decade of experience in manufacturing and tooling, working at a leading original equipment manufacturer in the aerospace industry. He will support Third Dimension’s technical expertise and product development in this market.

University of Bristol Mechanical Engineering graduate Daniel will explore new applications for Third Dimension products in liaison with the company’s software and hardware engineers, while chemical engineering specialist Jake brings expertise from a Master’s degree at the University of Birmingham and experience of the energy, mining and manufacturing sectors to the role.

Third Dimension chief executive officer Francois Froment said: “We constantly strive to push the boundaries of precision measurement and our decision to create this new application engineering team reflects our commitment to adding value for our customers.

“With varied backgrounds across manufacturing applications, Gerard, Daniel, and Jake will each bring a fresh perspective that will help us to tackle the most sophisticated metrology challenges with our hand-held and automated measurement systems.”

Established in 1995, Third Dimension has a long and reputable track record of supplying non-contact optical measurement equipment and services, including its GapGun and Vectro products, to the largest names in aerospace, automotive and energy sectors worldwide.
