Each week Bristol Business News gives a prominent member of the city’s business community the last word on its weekly e-bulletin. This week Laura Pye, head of culture at Bristol City Council, answers our 10 questions.
Film you watched? I honestly can’t remember. I watch a lot of stuff on Netflix but it tends to be box sets like Designated Survivor, House of Cards or Ozark. I think the last thing I saw at the cinema was Free Fire at Watershed.
Book you read? Girlfriend in a Coma by Douglas Coupland. Not my normal read as I normally just read management type self-help stuff or lighter best sellers but we were going away and I didn’t have a book to take so I picked this off the bookshelf at home and thought I would give it a go. It nearly lost my interest in the middle when it goes a little far-fetched for me but I finished it and enjoyed it.
Music you bought or download? My husband tends to do all the music downloading in our house. He is a massive music fan and I generally just moan about the stuff he plays that I don’t like. The last thing I downloaded, though, was Zombie Nation because I was trying to explain to someone what song they play at Tranmere Rovers games before they come on to the pitch.
Play or concert you attended: As you would expect, my job means I see a fair amount of live music and theatre, but I also see a fair amount in my own time. I was at the Downs concert the other week, which was a great event, and before that I saw the Flaming Lips at Colston Hall which was crazy. I’m really excited by the Bristol Music exhibition at M Shed next year. I can’t wait to see people’s stories of live music in the city from the past 60 years.
Sporting event you attended: I was at the NFL games at Wembley. I am a big NFL fan and we often go out to the US for the start of the season – but this year I just have my NFL London season ticket for the games over here to get my fix. I see a lot of sport, I am a massive Tranmere Rovers fan and will often spend my Saturday afternoons travelling to some non-league ground in the middle of nowhere. I went to the Olympics in London and Commonwealth games in Glasgow and when we travel to the US for the NFL we also try and see some baseball. In Bristol, I love watching the half marathon and seeing thousands of people running up the Portway against the backdrop of the Suspension Bridge.
Holiday you went on: I am off to Cuba in a couple of weeks but my last trip away was a few days in Menorca back in June. The weather was great and we were in a great hotel by a small harbour with lots of bars and restaurants. It was a nice few days of just chilling out. Bring on the next one!
Restaurant you went to: I went to the new Jamaica Street Stores the other night for our wedding anniversary. It’s only been open a few weeks but if you haven’t found it yet you should – the food is amazing and there is a great atmosphere.
Thing that annoyed you: People not making a decision or not saying what they mean annoys me and when people assume the worst rather than the best of colleagues.
Thing that made you laugh out loud: The Big Bang Theory often makes me laugh out loud much to the disapproval of my husband. Slapstick humour really gets me, like people falling over or banging their head etc.
Piece of good advice you were given: You can only control the things you can control so let the rest go.
