Each week Bristol Business News gives a prominent member of the city’s business community the last word on its weekly e-bulletin.
This week Dr Zara Nanu, CEO of Gapsquare, answers our 10 questions
What was the LAST:
Film you watched? On a recent long-haul flight I got hooked the American political comedy television sitcom Parks and Recreation starring Amy Poehler. It covers with brilliance the relationship between government and people, sexism and other political issues.
Book you read? Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow by Dr Yuval Noah Harari. It’s a fascinating book on how technology is challenging human kind.
Music you bought/downloaded? I’m a rock chick. My favourites include Nirvana, Pink Floyd and The Doors. I keep on adding to them on my playlist.
Concert or play you went to? Kings of Leon in Hyde Park this summer. But more recently I went to see my daughters in their school harvest concert a few weeks ago. It might sound cheesy, but the sound of children singing always fills me with energy and joy. I currently share my life between two cities – Bristol and Berlin – and next week I look forward to seeing Jordan Rakei at a gig in Berlin.
Sporting event you attended? My daughter’s football practice on a Saturday in August.
Holiday you went on? My latest holiday was in Switzerland last weekend with some friends and it was amazing. I’ve been to Geneva before, but exploring Swiss nature outside Geneva was brilliant. We had the perfect combination of that autumnal smell with a warm summer sun. We had a great time laughing, exploring and reading. I’m definitely going back. I always used to think that I will retire to Carmel-by-the-Sea, but now Switzerland is on the list.
Restaurant you ate in? Le Palais Oriental – Persian cuisine in the heart on Montreux in Switzerland. I fell in love with the food when my friend opened a Persian food restaurant Kookootoo in North Bristol and now love trying it when I am in other places.
Thing that annoyed you? It is very difficult to annoy me.
Thing that made you laugh out loud? Anyone who knows me personally will confirm that I laugh a lot, and laugh with tears. When I was in New York last month and somebody asked me what I do, I decided to have fun and tell them I run a bakery. The conversation quickly got out of control when they started asking more details about my cakes and cupcakes and wanted to follow me on Instagram. I held my position quite well but burst into laughing with tears as soon as the conversation was finished.
Piece of good advice you were given? Always remember the golden rules: Whoever has the gold makes the rules.
Zara Nanu moved to Bristol from Monterey in California because somebody told her Bristol was just like San Francisco. Eleven years later, she does not think Bristol is just like San Francisco. Zara has been running Gapsquare for the past two years, and their mission is to close the gender pay gap in the next 17 years.
