Volunteer presenters on Bristol community radio station BCfm are dreaming of broadcasting live from the World Cup in Brazil after an airline agreed to pay for their flights.
The station’s One Love Breakfast show team launched a social media campaign to see if they could persuade an airline to “take the One Love Breakfast to Brazil 2014”.
The idea was that Pat Hart and Harriet Robinson would broadcast their 7-10am morning show live from Rio de Janeiro for a week during the tournament, which starts on June 12 and ends with the final on July 13.
But while they are thrilled to have been offered two free tickets and four discounted flights from Air France/KLM, the station still needs new sponsors to help with the overall costs.
It is calling on businesses to follow the airline’s lead in return for “very high profile” during the broadcasts.
Harriet said: “We were totally shocked that a group of volunteers will get such an amazing opportunity to bring the culture and excitement of the World Cup to such an amazingly diverse city like Bristol.
“It just goes to show that if you dare to dream and work hard enough then your dream could really become a reality.”
The shows would focus on the community in and around Rio and link up with Bristol’s Brazilian community.
BCfm station manager Pat Hart said it was an “amazing opportunity for the presenters”.
“As a community station we are a training ground for so many presenters who eventually go on to work on the BBC or independent radio, increasing their employability and self-confidence.
“We have already broadcast alongside the BBC at last year’s St Paul’s carnival, The Harbour Festival and an array of high-profile events but if we can raise enough funds this will top it all.”
