Demolition work is under way on a key site in the heart of Redcliffe in preparation for the first phase of a major mixed use regeneration project that will revive an underutilised part of the city centre.
Developer Change Real Estate secured planning consent in April to transform the 0.8 acre site into a new urban hub in the last largely undeveloped area of central Bristol.
Phase one of Redcliff Quarter on Redcliff Street and St Thomas Street will include 128 residential units and three or four retail units.
A planning application for phase two on 2.5 acres of adjacent land will be submitted to Bristol City Council next spring.
The £180m, 500,000 sq ft development at Redcliff Quarter – which falls within the Redcliffe conservation area – is being brought forward as a joint venture between Change Real Estate, Cannon Family Office and ICG Longbow.
The architects are Hampshire firm Lyons Sleeman Hoare and demolition is being carried out by Wring Group.
Change Real Estate director Ron Persaud said: “Our vision for Redcliff Quarter is for a vibrant and inspirational development, influenced by the character and heritage of this historic area of Bristol.
“This is an area in great need of investment and care, having lain untouched for many years. With that comes huge responsibility and we’re delighted that Bristol City Council gave its unanimous backing to phase one when granting planning consent.
“This demolition work is a major step forward realising our vision for Redcliff Quarter.”
Construction is due to start in spring prior to which there will be a period of archaeological excavation.
