A Bristol manufacturer producing specialist pumps for aquariums, zoos and entertainment parks has boosted its green credentials while also supporting its next phase of growth.
Apex Pumps, which was founded in 1988 and has a 27-strong workforce, recently installed a 150-kW solar panel system on its Staple Hill factory roof, pictured below, using a £150,000 asset finance package from Lloyds Bank.
The project was also supported in part by the CGFI (Clean Growth Financing Initiative) scheme and a £47,000 grant from the West of England Combined Authority.
To improve energy efficiency, Apex Pumps also re-clad its building, with the support of a £90,000 recovery loan scheme.
The changes come as the business, which has doubled its turnover since 2022, aims to change its renewable energy sources to meet its target of being up to 50% self-sufficient for power.
Meanwhile, the firm has introduced improvements on the factory floor, including new specialist machinery bought to improve productivity while also maximising its energy efficiency.
Funded by an additional £150,000 facility from the bank, the Mazac Quick Turning Centre will further boost Apex Pumps’ bespoke in-house work, further cementing its position as a global leader for high-specification centrifugal pumps.
With more than half its output sold overseas, Apex Pumps is keen to maintain its strong international reputation, which is achieved by focusing on developing its future talent pipeline through apprenticeships and upskilling.
Apex Pumps managing director Andrew Simpson said: “Although most people might not be aware, the pumps we produce are crucial elements of many types of machinery that make everything from crucial industrial processes to their visits to entertainment parks possible.
“Overhauling our manufacturing methods and becoming more self-sufficient when it comes to energy usage, boosts our sustainability and competitiveness in global export markets.
“Given the huge scale of our industry, these kinds of investment can have a big impact in giving us an edge.
“The ongoing support from Lloyds Bank has been integral to realising these changes, and with solar panels that are projected to pay for themselves in just four years, the benefits to our business and beyond are profound.”
Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking relationship manager Richard Cox added: “We’re proud to be supporting the development of a business that not only puts sustainability at the forefront, but is also committed to nurturing future talent for its specialist operations through upskilling and training.
“With this funding push, Apex Pumps can provide even more specialist services, to mark it as a key player in its industry both nationally and abroad.”
