South West property consultancy Alder King has made a number of promotions and an appointment as part of its career development programme and to support client growth.

James Jacobs has been promoted to head of the firm’s building consultancy discipline with Jamie Wilton becoming a principal planner and James Tarpy a senior planner, while Georgina Nelson has been appointed as an associate.

Bristol-headquartered Alder King said James, a chartered building surveyor and partner with more than 20 years’ specialist expertise, had shown an exceptional commitment to growing the firm’s building consultancy offer over recent years.

In addition to providing services, including dilapidations, building surveys and bank monitoring, James established its principal designer service, working directly for clients or as a sub-consultant to lead designers.

He also has a particular specialism handling fire and flood reinstatement projects throughout the UK and acts as an APC assessor, supporting the next generation of building surveyors in gaining their RICS qualification.

Alder King said in recognition of his many achievements leading its building consultancy service in  Exeter, he had now taken on responsibility for the entire team based in Bristol and Exeter and will focus on growing it to meet the demand from clients for building consultancy services, while also further developing the service offer as opportunities are identified.

Jame and James’ promotions and Georgina’s appointment follow a period of strong growth for the planning team, during which it won a raft of instructions from new and existing clients.

Jamie joined the team as a graduate planner in 2018 and has since developed strong planning knowledge in sectors such as residential, retail, energy and advertising. He now deals with a wide range of complex and challenging planning matters on behalf of clients.

He is also supporting other Alder King planning graduates to help develop their skills and represents the firm externally in groups such as the Bristol Region Young Planners.

James, who joined as a graduate planner in 2021, recently undertook a part-time secondment with one of Alder King’s key retail clients.

The firm said this experience gave him the opportunity to develop and finesse his skills and knowledge and further solidified the Alder King brand and its range of services with the client.

James is also active with the Bristol Region Young Planners group, working on the committee to organise a range of CPD and social events for fellow local planning professionals.

Georgina has joined from Bristol development consultancy Origin3 and previously spent 15 years with Barton Willmore (now Stantec).

A chartered town planner with more than 20 years’ experience in the private sector, Georgina has particular expertise in leading residential applications for greenfield and brownfield development sites across the South West, including sensitive AONB (areas of outstanding natural beauty) and green belt locations.

She is an active member of Women in Property and is a previous chair of its South West branch.

Alder King senior partner Simon Smith said: “The Alder King teams have delivered a very strong performance over the past year against a challenging economic backdrop.

“This is testament to the calibre of our people and the quality of service we deliver.  Our building consultancy, planning, valuation and lease advisory teams have made particularly significant contributions.

“It is therefore very rewarding, as part of our career progression and development programme, to recognise the achievements of James, Jamie and James, and to welcome Georgina into our planning team.”

Alder King, which has consistently delivered the largest market share of office and industrial transactions in the South West, employs around 100 people across its offices in Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, Gloucester, Swindon, Taunton and Truro.
