Cutting paper usage by six million pages a year has put Bristol law firm Bond Pearce and legal document management specialists Canotec in the running for the Best Technology Project at this year’s The Lawyer magazine awards.

The new category recognises the positive impact of technology on the legal industry. Bond Pearce and Canotec, whose South West office is at Corston, near Bath, were shortlisted following the successful implementation of a less-paper managed print service under which 60 multi-function printers were introduced across Bond Pearce’s five offices, resulting in an average monthly reduction in paper consumption of 500,000 pages. In total, 6m pages a year were saved – the equivalent of 720 trees.

Bond Pearce planning partner Jonathan Bower, who led the project’s implementation said: “Bond Pearce is committed to improving its environmental performance by reducing the carbon footprint of its business activities.  With 650 staff across five offices, our annual paper consumption and energy consumption for printing was unsustainable.

“Canotec took the time to understand how Bond Pearce works and its proven experience and partnership approach were instrumental to the successful implementation of the new system. This initiative, along with many others we have undertaken, resulted in a 9% reduction in our carbon footprint last year.”

Canotec co-founder and head of its legal team David Newman added: “Staff at Bond Pearce have risen magnificently to the challenge of tackling unnecessary document creation and associated costs, and our green IT technology is reaping clear environmental and financial rewards for Bond Pearce.

“There is increased user satisfaction, device availability and productivity through improved digital document workflows and stress-free printing.”

The Lawyer awards take place next Tuesday at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel.

Bond Pearce was named Best Legal Adviser in the Legal Week Client Satisfaction Awards 2010 and 2011 and last year was shortlisted for The Lawyer Law firm of the year.
