Young entrepreneurs on a mission to pair students with small firms

Missionly, the pioneering Bristoln business that harnesses young people’s skills to benefit small businesses, is looking forward to a bright future after its official – and colourful – launch brought together more than 100 entrepreneurs, supporters and students.

The firm is the brainchild of Chris Dalley and Will Duddell, this year’s UWE Entrepreneurs of the Year award winners.

They realised that, while many students have great skills but little or no experience, small firms are crying out for skilled, enthusiastic people to help them grow their business but don’t know where to find them.

They also noticed that, due to the economy many small firms can’t afford to pay for these skills, they are prepared to ‘trade’ them for ‘rewards’ such as free meals, travel and the like.

Sporting bright orange t-shirts, ties and waistcoats during the launch event at its base in the Bridewell Space in Nelson Street, the Missionly team gave guests an overview of the business.

Will, pictured, who came to Bristol three years ago to study real estate management, said: “We want to build a community that supports local, independent businesses.

"I realised not long after I came here that there is a Catch 22. Students need experience to get work, but they can't get work without experience. At the same time there are lots of great, small, independent businesses who would love to gain access to these skills but can't afford them."

One small business – an independent café – had used the media skills of a student they found through Missionly to boost their web and social media presence. In return the student got free breakfasts and coffee.

The launch event was supported by Fridge Networking, which runs networking events for young entrepreneurs and innovators.
