Business owners have been urged take the lead in helping the recovery of the local economy by Richard Noble, whose Thrust2 programme brought the World Land Speed Record back to Britain in 1983 and subsequently set the first-ever supersonic land speed record.

He shared his personal insights and the challenges he faced in setting up his company during an evening at Brasserie Blanc, organised by the Bristol Members Network of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and sponsored by Barclays Business.

Mr Noble encouraged the packed audience to think outside of the box when faced with barriers preventing their business in succeeding. He went on to discuss the skills and knowledge gap evident in today's workforce, and the need for this to be addressed for the next generation of entrepreneurs to be able to follow in their footsteps.

Sharon Critchlow, president of the Network, said: “So many people either work in SMEs or are thinking about setting up a company. To hear from someone who has done it and been highly successful was fantastic. I know all the guests found Richard’s talk fascinating, as many people have experienced similar challenges in accessing finance and securing external investment.”

Sarah Sharpe, Barclays Business Manager, Bristol, and co-organiser of the event, added: “In Bristol we have some great people doing great things and this event I hope will give local businesses the confidence and knowledge to grow and expand their businesses in the future.”
