Ian Sharper has been appointed finance director at The Bristol Port Company, taking over from Richard Harvey who is retiring after 19 years with the company.

Ian, who has been financial controller at the port since January 2008, trained as a chartered in York, before working abroad for PricewaterhouseCoopers and then as financial controller for Bermuda Aviation Services.  He will be in charge of a finance team of 14.

Richard has been with the company since 1992, shortly after it was privatised, and has overseen the raising of finance and investment of more than £450m to build the business.

Chief executive Simon Bird said: "As we seek to develop the new £600m Deep Sea Container Terminal, the finance director's role is at the heart of all the company's future.  I am sure that Ian will be a great asset to the board."

He added: "Richard has been a superb finance director aiding the company as it has quadrupled in size and become much more efficient.  We are keen to retain his wealth of knowledge for the future so, although we wish him a long and happy retirement, we are delighted that he will stay with the board as a non executive director."
