National law firm Bevan Brittan has appointed Marti Burgess as a corporate partner in its Bristol office.

Marti, pictured, joins from Bristol-headquartered firm Gregg Latchams, where she has worked for just over seven years, most recently as head of corporate SME and as an associate director.

At Bevan Brittan she will advise on a broad range of corporate matters including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, investments, re-organisations, corporate governance, commercial contracts and general aspects of company and commercial law.

She brings with her specialist knowledge of the SME, owner-managed business and food/drink and hospitality sectors.

Montpelier-born Marti Burgess is well known in Bristol as chair of St Pauls Carnival CIC and the Black South West Network and for owning, with her family, the city’s iconic Lakota nightclub.

She also sits on the board of Bristol Cultural Development Partnership, the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

Marti said: “I am pleased to be joining a strong and ambitious corporate team at Bevan Brittan. It has a reputation for undertaking high-quality, complex work and has great strength in depth across many markets.”

Bevan Brittan head of corporate, finance and funding Chris Harper said Marti had a strong track record in providing corporate advice to a range of businesses in Bristol and the South West as well as deep connections to the city through St Pauls Carnival and promoting the city via the LEP to new businesses and enterprises.

“Marti is joining an experienced team that represents a broad range of organisations, from owner-managed businesses to multi-national corporations, and from housing associations to local authorities and the NHS,” he said.

“Our corporate team offers expert corporate advice across the whole of the UK including advice on investment, finance and private equity, joint ventures and partnerships; corporate governance; restructuring and re-organisations; mergers and acquisitions; and business recovery, continuity and insolvency.”

Bevan Brittan employs around 230 legal professionals and support staff in its Bristol office, including 28 partners.

While the firm had traditionally led in sectors such as local government, the NHS, independent and social care and the wider housing sector, it has widened its approach over recent years.

That has enabled it to successfully enter new markets including energy sustainability, manufacturing, insurance and technology. As a result, the firm – which also has offices in Birmingham, Leeds and London – now advises more than 800 businesses across the country.
