Hungarian airline Wizz Air, the largest low-cost carrier in Central and Eastern Europe, is to launch flights from Bristol Airport to the Polish city of Katowice.
The twice-weekly service will start on June 26 and operate every Monday and Friday. 
Bristol will be the 106th airport in the Budapest-based airline’s route network, which stretches from Barcelona and Belfast to Warsaw, Oslo and Dubai. It already operates flights from UK airports including Liverpool, Glasgow and Doncaster/Sheffield.
Wizz Air’s Bristol-Katowice flights will be operated by a 180-seat Airbus A320.
Wizz Air’s announcement follows those recently made by easyJet, Bristol Airport’s largest operator, to introduce flights next year to seven new destinations including Bilbao, Gibraltar and Porto, taking its total to 53.
Bristol Airport aviation director Shaun Browne said: “We are delighted to welcome Wizz Air to the South West of the UK. The Katowice service will be a popular addition to the route network available from Bristol Airport, further strengthening links with Poland.”
Wizz Air’s Daniel d Carvalho added: “The Wizz low-cost offer is a great opportunity for UK consumers explore Central and Eastern Europe and we look forward to carrying many passengers on our new Bristol-Katowice service.”
Tickets are now on sale from £25.99 one way, including taxes, non-optional charges and one small cabin bag.
Wizz Air expects the Katowice service to provide a convenient link for Poles from the region living and working in the South West as well as making an interest city break destination for UK tourists. It will be the airport’s seventh destination in Poland.
Katowice is the principal city of Poland’s Upper Silesian region of Poland and is a centre for science and industry, as well as being home to an eclectic mix of architectural styles with Gothic and Art Nouveau buildings alongside Modernist structures from the Communist era, and a neo-Classical cathedral, the largest in Poland.
Wizz Air operates a fleet of 54 Airbus A320 aircraft on more than 350 routes connecting 106 destinations across 37 countries. In the year ending March 31, it handled more than 13.9m passengers.
