Bristol commercial property solicitor Karl Brown has been appointed as a social mobility ambassador for the Law Society of England and Wales.

Karl, pictured, is a senior associate in national law firm Clarke Willmott’s Bristol office, where he has worked for 11 years.

Karl, a UWE Bristol Business Fellow and a former president of business group the Bristol Junior Chamber, has been a leading business advocate in the city for improving social mobility.

Born and bred in Downend after his parents arrived from the Caribbean in the 1960s, he attended junior school and then Downend comprehensive.

He went to the University of Hertfordshire before returning to Bristol for a year to complete a diploma course. He did paralegal and legal assistant work and sent around 100 applications to get his foot in the door of the very competitive profession.

Karl said: “I feel very humbled to have been appointed to my role as a social mobility ambassador.

“Improving social mobility is not just a moral cause but is also an important economic one for business and professions such as law.

“I hope in my role to be a positive example for people from less privileged backgrounds that through determination, hard work and high aspiration you can make it into professions such as law.”

Law Society launched its Social Mobility Ambassador programme last year has recently appointed 10 new ambassadors.

To be appointed to the role, they must have attended a non-fee paying school, been part of the first generation in their immediate family to attend higher education, be passionate about social mobility and fair access to the profession, and want to inspire others to follow their career ambitions.

The campaign aims to highlight how the profession is made up of accomplished and talented individuals from all walks of life, and how many will have experienced and overcome socio-economic hurdles in pursuit of their career ambitions and professional success.
