Plans to develop a Japanese-style ‘pod’ backpacker hostel in an empty building in Old Market have been submitted to Bristol City Council.

Space for up to 76 guests will be provided by a series of capsules, measuring 2 metres long, 1.25metres wide and 1 metre high, laid side by side and with steps providing access to pods on a second level.

A curtain or fibre glass door at one end of the capsule will provide privacy. The hotel will also have a cafe and reception area.

The planning application says the new hostel “will serve the current and future potential diverse needs of the area. The upgrading of the premises will provide a further contribution to improvements for the Old Market Conservation Area.”

The new hostel, in a listed building at 74 West Street, is based on a concept developed in Japan that features a large number of extremely small pods, intended to provide cheap and basic overnight accommodation.
