International architects to sketch out designs for ‘forgotten’ Redcliffe

Leading international urban planners and Bristol Mayor George Ferguson will this evening explore options for the city centre’s last remaining regeneration area in a debate looking at the future of Redcliffe.

The often-overlooked part of the city centre boasts some impressive architecture, historic streetscapes and great vistas – but also has acres of under-used tarmac, rundown buildings and is sliced in half by the dual carriageway Redcliffe Way.

This evening’s event, called Power, Heart, Imagination: new model regeneration Bristol fashion, will pose the question: New York has its High Line, Madrid the Rio Project and London Exhibition Road – but where is Bristol’s standout piece of new civic space?

The recently-elected independent mayor and the local community have been looking at options for the area and this evening’s event, hosted by the Redcliffe Neighbourhood Development Forum and held at the Arnolfini, will look at new approaches to development including self-build, new mixes of uses and alternative finance models.

As well as the mayor, the speakers will include world-renowned architects Jan Gehl from Copenhagen and David Mackay from Barcelona and award-winning ethical developer Chris Brown from Igloo.

This event is part of Ambitious City – the Architecture Centre’s year-long programme of exciting exhibitions and events.
