Bristol’s newest hotel, the four-star Clayton Hotel Bristol City, has drawn on the city’s artistic prowess past and present to give it a distinctive character.

The 255-bedroom hotel, which also include a 150-cover restaurant, bar, gym, and extensive conference facilities, has been built behind the iconic façade of the Grade ll listed former Edward Everard’s Printing Works on Broad Street.

Dalata Hotel Group, the largest hotel operator in Ireland which invested £50m investment in developing the hotel, has also made sustainability a priority for the hotel.

It estimates that its decision to refurbish the existing building rather than demolish it and build anew, will have saved 2,084 tonnes of CO2 emissions – equivalent to the CO2 emitted in powering 264 homes in one year.

The site also included the 1970s former NatWest Court building, which extends through to Nelson Street, as well as the listed Everards Building – known for its unique art nouveau façade, which now frames the hotel’s main entrance.

Dating back to the 1900s, the façade pays tribute to the founder of the Arts and Crafts Movement William Morris and inventor of the printing press Johannes Gutenberg.

To mark the opening, the hotel commissioned Bristol street artist Inkie to create a bespoke piece of artwork for the hotel, in his ‘ink nouveau’ style inspired by William Morris, pictured.

Dalata also worked with street artists Felix ‘FLX’ Braun, HazardOne and Adam Nathaniel Furman as part of the Everards Printworks development while printing motifs and typefaces appear throughout the hotel’s rooms and public spaces.

Clayton Hotel Bristol City general manager Alison Mansfield said: “Condé Nast previously ranked Bristol as one of the top 13 cities in the UK to take a short break in 2022 and it’s easy to see why. We’re delighted to give guests a warm welcome and become part of the Everards story.”

Visit West director of tourism Kathryn Davis added: “We are delighted to welcome the Clayton Hotel to Bristol. It is great to see the Grade ll listed Everards print works transformed, breathing life into one of the city’s most beautiful facades.

“The hotel will be welcoming guests into the historic heart of the city, and still celebrating our contemporary creative spirit, and I wish the whole team the best of luck for the future.”

Dalata Hotel Group CEO Dermot Crowley said the opening was a further demonstration of the group’s ambition to grow its presence in the UK market.

“It is a fabulous property in one of the UK’s most popular destination cities,” he added.

“We are confident of the continued recovery in the hospitality sector and look forward to investing in other targeted UK locations throughout 2022 and beyond.

“Our greatest asset continues to be our engaged people, in Ireland, the UK and Germany, and we are proud that we are generating significant new employment in the market.

“This will be the 17th hotel operated by Dalata in the UK, and our pipeline includes hotels in London, Brighton, Liverpool, Glasgow and Manchester. This is definitely a time to look forward.”

The launch of the Clayton Hotel Bristol City comes amid a flurry of new hotel openings in the city. The 197-bedroom Leonardo Hotel Bristol Glassfields, part of the new Glassfields mixed-use development on Temple Way, opened its doors late last year while the 214-room Moxy on Newfoundland Street is due to open later this month.
