An electrical contractor set up less than five years ago has scooped a national award for being the best small business in the industry.

Source Electrical topped the Electrical Contractor of the Year (up to £5m turnover) category of the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) Awards in recognition of its “hard work and commitment to raising standards in the industry”.

The firm was set up by managing director Ian Rogers and co-director Paul Lanning, who between them have more than 40 years’ experience in electrical contracting.

Today the Worle-based company employs 20 staff working on design, specification and installation services across a variety of sectors.

It specialises in renewable power and heating systems, including EV charging solutions for business and residential customers.

Its ECA award submission highlighted its work saving clients money and carbon emissions through LED lighting upgrades, installing photovoltaic panels for a variety of organisations and helping businesses convert fleets to electric vehicles.

The awards ceremony at the Hilton London Bankside hotel was attended by Source Electrical, with trophy – which was won against stiff competition – presented to the firm by ECA officials and BBC Sport presenter Mike Bushell.

Ian Rogers said: “This recognition among our peers reflects the hard work, dedication, and innovation of our entire team.

“We are incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together and grateful for the support of our clients and partners.

“A huge ‘thank you’ to the ECA for this prestigious award and to everyone who has been a part of our journey. Here’s to continuing to raise the bar in our industry.”

ECA regional manager Dave Battrick congratulated Source Electrical on winning the award, adding: “I’m really proud of Ian and the team for representing the West region so strongly in the awards.

“On behalf of the ECA, I’d like to congratulate everyone at the company for their hard work and commitment to raising standards in the industry.

“They’re a great company with an excellent set of values and work ethics – deserved winners and we look forward to seeing them progress.”

One West of England business grateful for Source Electrical’s sustainability work over the past 12 months is South Gloucestershire-based hospitality supplies firm Yate Supplies.

After suffering a 90% slump in turnover during the pandemic, the company decided to instal a solar energy system as part of its plan for a more sustainable future.

Source Electrical installed 170 panels, each producing 425watts and totalling just under 60,000 kWh a year, which now produces half of Yate Supplies’ annual energy requirement. The saving means the investment will pay for itself in less than four years.

Ian Rogers added: “When we set up this business we wanted to play our part in changing the industry, moving from just being a contractor and trades supplier to aiming to take away clients’ problems.

“A key focus was to make us an easy company to work with, adding value in the design solutions we provide as well as slick communication with the contacts at each project we work on.

“We believe contractors have an important role to play in promoting a positive reputation for our industry, to help create an ecosystem of reliable businesses who take pride in their profession and who recognise the value of long-term relationships.

“That’s the way to create sustainable businesses of the future – where profits are a secondary benefit to creating a company which has the right values at its core.”
