Growth in private sector work helps drive up annual revenue and profits at Bevan Brittan

Annual net profits, revenue and staffing have all increased at Bristol-headquartered national law firm Bevan Brittan as a result of growth in its private sector work as well as from its core public sector clients.

Revenue increased by 8% to £37.7m while net profits grew by 9%. Profit per equity partner (PEP) rose by 7.4% to £305,000 in its financial year 2015-16.

Bevan Brittan advises all local authorities in England, a third of all NHS bodies and 40 housing associations – but it also works with more than 100 private sector companies – an important and growing market sector for the firm.

Last September it opened an office in Leeds, which now employs seven partners. Total headcount at the firm, which also has offices in Birmingham and London, continued to grow to 52 partners and 295 staff.

Managing partner Duncan Weir, pictured, said he was delighted the results had been achieved in the same year as the investment in the new Leeds office along with investment in new technology to improve delivery to clients.

“All this was achieved without increasing our already low borrowing levels,” he added. “It is particularly gratifying to see significant growth in our purely private sector work as well as in our public services work.

“These remain challenging times for both our private sector and public sector clients, and the Brexit vote has only added to the challenges we all face.

“But with these results, we are in a strong position to continue to successfully deliver to our clients and to continue to manage a profitable and sustainable business.”
