Bristol animation production studio A Productions has scooped an international award for its part in creating the ground-breaking children’s TV series leading JoJo & Gran Gran.

A Productions worked in collaboration with BBC Studios Kids & Family Productions on series one and two of the hugely successful series, pictured, which celebrates the special relationship between a grandparent and a child and is the first UK pre-school animation to centre on a Black British family.

The team is currently working on a third series for CBeebies.

The 2D animated series was named Best Mixed-Media Series at the Kidscreen Awards 2022, the high-profile celebration of excellence in children’s content held recently in Miami.

The awards pay tribute to outstanding TV and digital media work that keeps kids and families entertained. Hundreds of entries are received from around the world each year.

It is the latest award in a string of awards for JoJo & Gran Gran, which was inspired by characters created by Laura Henry-Allain MBE.

A Productions undertook extensive research and interviews in Bristol ahead of making the programme, creating a panel made up of a range of voices from local communities that worked closely with its creative team in helping to shape JoJo & Gran Gran.

A Productions joint managing director Katherine McQueen said: “A huge congratulations to the entire JoJo & Gran Gran team. We are immensely proud of what we’ve been able to achieve together.

“Through authentic storytelling, JoJo & Gran Gran has captured the imagination of so many children and families, as well as illustrated the importance of diverse on-screen representation.

“We are excited about the future of this ground-breaking series and thrilled to be part of its journey.”

BBC Studios Kids & Family Productions genre lead animation and puppetry Tony Reed added: “We are thrilled to have picked up this award for JoJo & Gran Gran, which continues to strike a chord with its audience and represents an authentic slice of life in the UK.”

A Productions is a creative-led, multi-discipline animation production studio that produces award-winning children’s content for broadcasters and streamers.

Founded in 1985, it has since grown to a 150-strong team, pictured, and is now based across two studios on Colston Street and in Old Market.

A Productions has worked with some of the world’s most iconic characters with notable productions including Love Monster and The Tweenies for CBeebies, Furry Friends forever: Elmo Gets a Puppy for Sesame Workshop and The Monster at the End of This Story, Sesame Street’s first ever animated special.

It has also created content for HBO Max, Sony, Disney, Channel 4, CITV, CBBC and BBC Education.

In January French animation film maker and distributor Cyber Group Studios acquired a majority stake in the firm in a deal that will include collaboration on new content for a global audience.
