Olympics help pull economy out of recession

The economy has emerged from recession, official figures out today show. The economy grew by 1%, in the three months from July to September, helped by the Olympic Games.

The Office for National Statistics said that Olympic ticket sales had added 0.2 percentage points to the gross domestic product figures (GDP).

Today’s figures end a miserable nine months when the economy had been shrinking as the country endured the first double-dip recession since the 1950s.
