Healthcare charity Nuffield Health has begun demolition work at its Chesterfield Hospital site in Clifton as part of a £20m redevelopment project to create a state-of-the-art medical facility for Bristol.
The demolition, carried out by VINCI Construction, will remove the 1970s hospital building at the rear of the site.
The first section to be demolished will be the former theatre extension to the old hospital wing.
Excavation for the new high-specification hospital building is due to start in May.
The redevelopment of the Chesterfield Hospital will create the first digital hospital in the Bristol region and a centre of excellence in minimally invasive surgery.
There will be three operating theatres, 12 consulting rooms and space for up to 30-in patients.
The project safeguards 95 jobs and potentially creates up to 50 more.
Hospital director Ashley Livesey said: “The redevelopment will enable us to build on our 50 year strong reputation for healthcare excellence in the city and bring the latest medical technology and techniques to Bristol. The demolition of the outdated buildings to make way for our new state-of-the-art operating, diagnostic and consulting rooms is the first big step towards this.”
VINCI senior project manager Martin Cocks added: “The new Chesterfield Hospital will not only make use of the latest medical technology but the building itself will be future thinking with energy efficiency and sustainable practices at the core of our build.”
The redevelopment will incorporate the sympathetic restoration of the Grade-II listed Georgian merchant’s house which fronts the site and which will house administrative support for the hospital.
The new hospital is due to open next summer, at which point existing operations at Nuffield Health’s St Mary’s hospital will be transferred over to the new site.
