Bristol-based structural engineering consultancy Clarkebond has been shortlisted for a prestigious award for a major – and challenging – project close to the city.

The firm, which has been ranked as one of the fastest-growing consultants in the country for the past two years, is shortlisted in the 2016 Ground Engineering Awards, competing in the category for UK Projects valued between £1m and £3m.

The firm was contracted to handle the infilling of the former Barnhill Quarry in Chipping Sodbury to create a level 30,000 sq m development platform for housing.

In places the quarry was 35m deep and up to 125m wide. Clarkebond overcame considerable challenges to achieve settlement targets within three months of filling completion, which was key to the project’s viability.

Before the awards, all finalists will attend face-to-face judging by members of the 43-strong jury, made up of clients, contractors, consultants and academics.

Clarkebond executive director John Pavey said: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted for this award.

“It’s a great way to demonstrate to our clients that we are best in class and also recognition for the expertise of our teams.”

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Hilton Park Lane, London, on June 30 attended by more than 800 of the industry elite.

Clarkebond provides a range of engineering consultancy service from its Bristol offices on Cumberland Road including structures, infrastructure, hydrology and flood risk management, ground engineering and transport planning.  It also has offices in London and Exeter.
