James Morter, a partner in accountants Grant Thornton’s Bristol audit and assurance team, has been appointed to the CBI’s South West Council.

The council, which gathers the views of the region’s business community on major policy issues, meets quarterly and members serve a two-year term. James joins almost 60 West business figures on the council, which is chaired by Jim French of Flybe. The vice-chairman is Graham Cole of AgustaWestland.

James joined Grant Thornton in 2001 and was made a partner in 2011. He advises a wide range of public and private businesses and has also worked on banking and corporate finance transactions. He has an honours degree in music from York University.

He said: “The CBI is the voice of business both nationally and across our region,” says James.

“My colleague and fellow Grant Thornton partner Mark Aldridge sat on the council until recently, so I am delighted to be able to continue representing the firm at a time when we are also partnering with the CBI nationally in its M-Clubs initiative.”

M-Clubs focus on the contribution of medium-sized businesses to the private-sector led recovery and help them unlock their growth potential. Mid-sized businesses are seen as integral to the recovery prospects and long-term health of the economy.

CBI M-Clubs are also sponsored by Lloyds Bank and GE Capital. The club’s first meeting in the South West takes place in Bristol on January 24.

CBI South West director Simon Moore said: “James’s experience of business across the South West will help us hugely in that debate.”
