Bristol-headquartered national law firm Burges Salmon has opened an office in Dublin to ensure its intellectual property (IP) practice can continue to its work on EU trade marks once the Brexit transition period ends.
Burges Salmon is the latest UK law firm to open new, or strengthen existing, offices in Ireland to allow them to carry on EU-related work following the UK’s withdrawal from the Single Market on December 31.
Its new Dublin base, which will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary, has already recruited two highly experienced trade mark attorneys.
Louise Carey, pictured right, a dual qualified Irish solicitor and Irish/EU trade mark attorney, joins from Dublin-based Tomkins.
She has 30 years’ experience in EU and Irish trade mark law across both contentious and non-contentious intellectual property matters, is highly respected in the IP community for her legal and business expertise and has lectured at the Law Society of Ireland, tutoring on its intellectual property diploma course.
Also joining is Alison Brennan, pictured below, a dual-qualified solicitor and trade mark attorney with experience advising on contentious and non-contentious trade mark matters in the EU and Ireland.
Burges Salmon managing partner Roger Bull said: “We’re delighted to be cementing our reputation as a strategic player in the European intellectual property market with the opening of a subsidiary office in Dublin.
“The launch of our Ireland-based IP practice demonstrates our commitment to the needs of our clients as we continue to represent them on EU trade mark matters and wider intellectual property portfolio protection in the post-Brexit market.
“Our EU offering and ability to assist clients in the Irish market will also enable us to develop our existing client relationships as well as supporting the growth of our internationally recognised practice.”
Head of Burges Salmon’s IP team Jeremy Dickerson added: “It’s a very exciting time for Burges Salmon and for the practice.
“We’re proud to represent a number of high-profile, global brands and our subsidiary office in Dublin means that we can continue to deliver our market-leading expertise and insight in the EU across a range of industry sectors after the Brexit transition period has ended.”
Burges Salmon employs more than 800 people in its Bristol HQ and London office along with a base in Edinburgh, which it opened around 18 months ago.
