Five new partners have been appointed by Bristol-headquartered law firm Burges Salmon across key areas including dispute resolution, real estate, funds and asset management, and competition.

The move takes Burges Salmon’s total number of partners to 88 and reflect the firm’s work in a number of selected markets where its knowledge, experience and skills deliver highly effective solutions to its clients’ complex needs.

Emma Folkes will become a partner in the firm’s real estate team. She joined Burges Salmon in 2007 and specialises in high-value agricultural, residential and rural commercial property, including investment property, landed estates and greenfield development sites, advising individuals, institutional and corporate clients on a wide variety of transactional matters.

Ian Tucker and Michael Ward will become partners in the firm’s dispute resolution department.

Ian has worked at Burges Salmon since 2004 and has more than 12 years’ experience of court litigation and alternative dispute resolution including arbitration, expert determinations, mediation and regulatory appeals.

As well as general commercial litigation, Ian specialises in procurement, judicial review and transport disputes for large corporates and other commercial organisations. He has advised clients in the rail industry on all forms of dispute resolution including access disputes and industry and regulatory appeals.

Michael joined the firm three years ago to specialise in resolving complex government, shareholder and corporate disputes both domestically and internationally. He has also acted on pro bono cases representing a number of charities particularly in the fields of healthcare and disability.

The fourth new partner, Chris Worrall, is an experienced EU competition and anti-trust lawyer and joins Burges Salmon’s competition team, having previously been a senior associate at Clifford Chance. He has more than 10 years’ experience in all aspects of competition law including anti-trust investigations, cartels, abuse of market power and merger control. He has worked on numerous high-profile antitrust matters and specialises in a range of sectors with a particular focus on financial services, media, travel, healthcare and retail.

Jeremy Bell joins as a partner in the firm’s funds and asset management team. Previously a partner in the investment funds group at Ashurst, his practice includes advising on the structuring and formation of private investment funds across the alternative asset classes (private equity/venture capital, debt, real estate and infrastructure). This includes advising on carried interest arrangements and structuring and establishing management/advisory vehicles. Jeremy also advises investors on investment into funds.

Burges Salmon managing partner Peter Morris, pictured, said: “We are delighted to welcome these excellent lawyers to the partnership. We have a unique model and collaborative culture at Burges Salmon, and we look forward to seeing all of our new partners thrive in this environment.”
