Bristol’s year as European Green Capital starts on a high

Bristol’s year as European Green Capital officially got underway with a spectacular high-wire act on Saturday evening watched by thousands.

In a breath-taking and colourful public opening ceremony, Jade Kindar-Martin from Bristol-based Cirque Bijou cycled along a 120m long high wire set between the city’s iconic A and B Bond buildings in Hotwells with his stuntwoman – and wife – Karine Mauffrey performing a dramatic aerial trapeze routine underneath the wire.

As the couple undertook their feat 25m above the ground, both buildings were bathed in light accompanied by a musical score specially composed by Dom Coyote.

The performance, called Bridging the Gap, was commissioned to bring to life the concept of the ‘green gap’ – the difference between green intentions and actions.
