Bristol’s ‘phone box millionaire’ Dr Stephen Fear, the city-born entrepreneur and businessman, is to co-host a four-part radio series aimed at inspiring young people of all backgrounds to become entrepreneurs and create their own futures through enterprise.
The first of four monthly shows, called Dr Fear’s Business Remedies, will be broadcast on September 8 at 5:30pm on Ujima Radio 98FM, the Bristol Community radio station that provides news, topical discussion and music.
Dr Fear, the British Library’s Entrepreneur in Residence, will draw from his personal experience of a disenfranchised childhood, living between a small caravan and a one-bedroom flat, to become a multimillionaire philanthropist and successful serial entrepreneur.
Dr Fear started his business life in Bristol more than 40 years ago from a red phone box on the council estate where he lived. In July 2013, he was also awarded an honorary Doctorate of Business Administration from UWE Bristol for his continued service to Entrepreneurs and Entrepreneurship.
Talking about what made him want to be part of this radio series, Dr Stephen Fear said: “It is essential that society focuses on making the poor richer, not the rich poorer. It's about creating balance which can only be achieved by raising the bar and instilling self-belief.”
Fear added: “With this series of programmes we aim to encourage young people, who seemingly have little or no future, to become creators of their own wealth, that benefits both themselves and society. Wealth is not just about money, it's about attitude and community too. Some may also become millionaires in their own right and future leaders of a more balanced and tolerant society."
Roger Griffith, Chair of Ujima Radio CIC and co-host of the show, commented: “Stephen is a well-known figure in the community and after facing so much adversity and then becoming one of the country’s leading businessmen, he is an inspiring individual and we believe Ujima Radio is the perfect platform for him to engage and influence his audience. We want to inspire people of all backgrounds to achieving success. We will be working with a young team of entrepreneur’s, who are seeking advice and guidance in tough economic times. By working with a grass-roots community based social enterprise this is one way to encourage future business leaders ’’
