The finalists in the RSG Bristol Young Student of the Year Competition have taken part in a Dress to Impress masterclass as the contest nears its conclusion.
The one-off session at The Mall, Cribbs Causeway, gave the youngsters helpful hints on how to dress appropriately for interviews with potential employers.
Image consultant and personal shopper Emmeline Stevens discussed how different colours suit different people, how to shop within a budget, what styles to avoid for interviews and how to create an overall impression of confidence within a business environment.
The finalist teams were then given £40 each – courtesy of The Mall – to pick one outfit to present back to the group, explaining why they chose it.
Run over six months, The RSG Bristol Young Student of the Year Awards gives students the opportunity to win a life-changing £15,000 scholarship with BPP University College in Bristol.
The theme for this year’s competition has been Bristol Young Futures, which has involved pairing students with clients from key industry sectors to create a social media site. This will link students with the businesses to strengthen their employment opportunities and help address rising levels of unemployment within this age group.
Mike Beesley, chief executive of Clifton-based national recruitment company Resource Solutions Group (RSG), the competition’s main sponsor, said: “We have been inspired by the high level of business and creative acumen that has been on display throughout the competition.
“The dedication the students have demonstrated throughout the tasks set for them, such as the Dress For Success masterclass, demonstrates real business talent which we are keen to ensure does not go to waste in the face of today’s economic climate.”
Awards founder and event organiser Elaine Brown added: “It was great to see the finalists get so involved in this masterclass. The day was a great success and some real life lessons were learnt as a result. The feedback we received from the participating students also demonstrated their keenness to succeed in business as well as in the competition.”
More than two thirds of schools in Bristol entered this year’s competition. Finalists include Ashton Park Sixth Form, Castle School Sixth Form, Downend Post 16, Marlwood School, Patchway Community College, SBL, South Gloucestershire and Stroud College, St Brendan’s Sixth Form College and St Katherine’s Sixth Form College.
The awards will be presented in the Bristol Fashion Week Pavilion at The Mall on March 25.
