Bristol’s Mbargo nightclub, made famous after England cricket star Ben Stokes was involved in an altercation outside it, has been sold for £1.3m.
The 8,401 sq ft club, pictured, on Triangle West in Clifton, is popular with students from nearby the University of Bristol.
It had originally been put on the market by national property consultancy Carter Jonas on behalf of its private owners earlier this year with a guide price of £925,000.
But following a competitive bidding process, the club, which is over four floors, has been acquired freehold by Buckinghamshire-based Matterhorn Investments.
Carter Jonas said it is understood the new owners plan to continue running the premises as a nightclub under the same name.
The building has operated as licenced premises for more than 25 years.
It hit the headlines in 2018 when Ashes hero Stokes was found not guilty at Bristol Crown Court after being charged with affray following a brawl involving a group of men outside the club the previous September.
Last year a mock-up of a blue plaque appeared outside the club with the inscription ‘It was here that Ben Stokes lamped an oik’. The plaque later disappeared.
Carter Jonas’ Bristol commercial team was instructed to sell the property in April. The firm said its marketing campaign attracted a large volume of interest and viewings.
Carter Jonas Bristol commercial partner Stuart Williams said: “Triangle West, with its Clifton address, is one of the most popular locations in Bristol’s night-time economy, and its neighbouring streets are some of its most iconic and recognisable shopping locations.
“These factors meant the site presented a great opportunity to investors looking for a visible presence in the city.
“We received a huge amount of interest from potential buyers and we are pleased to have secured a sale over the guide price with the purchase completing in just four weeks.”
