Two Bristol-headquartered law firms have been named in the world’s top three most-active advisers on clean energy deals.
Burges Salmon is ranked in second place for merger and acquisition (M&A) deals in the Clean Energy Legal League Tables 2022, while TLT takes third spot.
The tables, compiled by , which provides news, data and analytics for the renewables finance industry, ranks the top 20 global law firms that provided legal advice to developers, businesses and investors on transactions for global clean energy project developments, technologies, energy project finance and M&A deals over the previous 12 months.
Burges Salmon, which completed 61 transactions in the sector with a combined value of $1.3bn (£1.1bn), also came eighth in the table for project finance with 18 transactions totalling almost $1.9bn.
TLT was ranked as the third most active adviser after advising on 45 deals. The firm was also placed 12th for the number of project finance deal, advising on 10 worth a value of $186m.
In the previous table – for 2022 – TLT had come second for the number of M&A deals after climbing from fourth position in 1019’s rankings.
Clean energy deployment is set to accelerate both in the UK and internationally in 2022, as a major pillar of the net zero agenda.
In turn, net zero requires flexibility and a breadth of experience from legal teams in order to support clients with more holistic advice.
Burges Salmon’s energy team advises a diverse mix of developers, utilities, and investors on transactions involving clean energy project developments and technologies, including solar, onshore/offshore wind, energy storage, hydro, geothermal, grid infrastructure, energy efficiency, hydrogen, green transportation, carbon capture & storage (CCS), biofuels, biomass and waste-to-energy.
Burges Salmon partner Camilla Usher-Clark, pictured, who leads the firm’s corporate energy M&A team, said: “We’re extremely proud to feature so prominently again in this year’s Clean Energy Pipeline rankings.
“It’s a real testament to the hard work of our whole sector team and to the passion and ambition of so many of our lawyers who collectively have a strong desire to help our clients drive forward clean energy deployment and their own net zero agenda.”
TLT’s notable projects included advising Ecotricity on the sale of The Electric Highway to GRIDSERVE, advising Korkia on its first clean energy investments in the UK – a 500MW solar joint venture with ClimateER – and a 1GW solar joint venture with Evolution Power and advising Eastleigh Borough Council on the acquisition of the Chalcroft solar project from Octopus.
TLT partner Kay Hobbs, pictured, said: “In the last couple of years we have worked on some of the most significant clean energy projects in the UK.
“It’s an honour to see the hard work and dedication of our team recognised once again in Clean Energy Pipeline’s legal league table.
“The volume of M&A deals we advised on in 2021 is a reflection of our position as a leader for clean energy.
“We’re pleased that we still rank in the top three law firms in the country and will continue to play a key role in identifying opportunities for developers, investors and funders.”
