The clock is ticking for Bristol directors to enter the region’s top award scheme recognising excellence and enterprise in the boardroom.
The deadline for the Institute of Directors’ (IoD) South West Director of the Year Awards 2017 is March 31 and organisers are urging Bristol’s top executives to get their skates on and submit their entries.
The awards seek to recognise outstanding leaders and entrepreneurs and focus UK-wide attention on success in the region.
Nominations are open to anyone working at director level in any type of business or organisation – they don’t have to be an IoD member.
Award categories include Family Business, Public Sector, Not for Profit/Third Sector, International, Corporate Responsibility, Young Director and Director.
A panel of experts will judge the entries and the winners will be announced at a dinner on May 25 at Bristol’s Ashton Gate Stadium.
Last year’s winners included Simon Barbato, managing director of Bath-based digital and marketing agency Mr B and Friends, who was named South West IoD Director of the Year, and Brady George, managing director of Keynsham-based facilities management company Almeda Facilities. Brady went on to win the national award for Leadership in Corporate Responsibility.
IoD South West chairman Nick Sturge, a winner in 2014 and director of Bristol’s Engine Shed enterprise hub, said: “These awards recognise and celebrate the role of business and enterprise leaders and their contribution to the diverse economy of the South West, from aerospace, technology and tourism through to our reputation in the creative industries and social enterprise.
“There are some exciting businesses in this region, from start-ups to multi-million pound turnover international players, many of whom don’t get the recognition they deserve.
“This year we have really stretched the net wide and urged businesses who perhaps haven’t thought about entering before to give it a go. If you have this on your ‘to do’ list, make sure you don’t miss the deadline.”
Other IoD South West award winners last year were:
Young Director – James Piper, commercial director of Ecosurety in Bristol, which enables clients to meet waste obligations under UK and EU regulations;
Third Sector/Not for Profit – Mark Crutchley, chief executive of Circadian Trust, which manages leisure centres across South Gloucestershire on behalf of the local authority;
Family Business Director – Andrew Robinson, managing director of Arc Energy Resources, near Gloucester;
John Ford, of the family business Ford Fuel Oils, based in Bristol but with a further six depots across England and Wales, was the highest scorer in the South West who has taken the IoD Certificate in Company Direction Exam in the past 12 months, with Alan Woolford, of Qinetiq in Salisbury as runner up.
