New and enhanced science laboratories at UWE Bristol have been officially opened following a £7m redevelopment project, better preparing students for work in the city’s growing science-related sectors.
Known as the ‘Lab Zone’ and made up of a connected series of research labs and teaching spaces, pictured, the area is used by more than 1,000 undergraduate and post-graduate students studying forensic, biological biomedical, environmental and conservation science.
A post-graduate research centre has also been created, providing improved facilities for masters and PhD research students.
Department of Applied Sciences head, Dr Lyn Newton, said: “We’ve always had a vision of bringing the labs together and making them better connected, more open in layout and with much greater visibility for students and staff.
“These new labs are vastly improved, with better lighting, flooring and surfaces, all resulting in an improved teaching and learning experience.
“This is significant investment for our students and I’m pleased the work is now complete. Our students will benefit from the enhanced facilities and develop the lab skills needed for the latest jobs in industry.”
Prof Steven Neill, pro vice-chancellor and executive dean for the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences, added: “I’m delighted we’re celebrating the completion of the final phase of internal refurbishment works to our labs. This has been a complex multi-million pound investment by the university which will attract and support future students, staff and research investment for years to come.
“I’d like to congratulate our dedicated staff for the excellent teamwork across the university that made this project possible and successful.”
Deputy vice-chancellor Prof Jane Harrington formally opened the state-of-the-art labs in the Faculty of Applied Sciences at an event for staff and students.
