Bike, art and coffee shops pop up to recycle empty Clifton retail scheme

A shared love of bikes, art and coffee has brought a varied collection of businesses together to turn an empty Clifton Village shopping scheme into a vibrant pop-up community.

The venture, called THAT Clifton Pop-up, brings together Bath-based coffee house group Jika Jika, Bath Ales’ craft beer brand Beerd and galleries Modern ArtBuyer and The Rebel Collection.

The largest unit in the scheme has been taken by All things Bike and Beautiful to showcase Boneshaker magazine, the Bristol Bike Project, The Letterpress Collective, Bristol Dropouts, cycling accessories and live artworks created on site by illustrator, Simon Spilsbury.

The idea for the pop-ups came from Peter Tisdale of London-based property development firm THAT Group, which bought the site in Clifton Down Road for redevelopment as a mixed residential and retail scheme.

He realised that keeping the shop units empty ahead of their demolition later this year served no purpose – and, with the help of graphic artist Peter Whitehead, brought together the varied occupiers.

THAT Clifton Pop-up will be open until September 19 when US-based ArtCrank stages a live event to act as a finale.

Peter Tisdale said: “We’re really excited to be looking at long-term projects in Clifton and are focused on ensuring that we add something valuable to the vibrant local community in the meantime. In supporting this pop-up, we’re hoping to create a real buzz and add to the energy of the Clifton area.”
