Business’s responsibility to society and social change will be the main topic at Bristol Chamber of Commerce’s annual dinner next month – with guest speaker Big Issue joint founder John Bird MBE unlikely to pull any punches.
Mr Bird was born into poverty, brought up in care and, at various stages of his life, been a thief, prison inmate, artist and poet. Now an established iconoclast, activist and president of The Big Issue Foundation Board of Trustees, he is the force behind the world’s most successful street magazine.
The Big Issue has sold more than 50m copies, employed more than 15,000 homeless people in the UK alone and generating £25m-plus in payments to vendors.
With an outstanding record of using business as a tool for social change, Mr Bird will offer some original perspectives on the interaction of business and society.
The Chamber annual dinner is a highlight of Bristol’s business calendar, celebrating enterprise in the city and across the wider region. It takes place this year on March 29 at The Grand Hotel, Broad Street.
