The Engine Shed, Bristol’s focal point for innovation, has collected another award for its imaginative reuse of part of Brunel’s original Temple Meads station.

The building, re-engineered by Bristol architects Childs & Sulzmann, topped the heritage category in the South West Built Environment Awards. Judges said it “demonstrated a sensitive and innovative approach to the transformation of a historically important building from a derelict shell, into a building fit for the demands of the 21st century”.

Their citation continued: “It is a project which ensures that a building which has a unique place in the history of our region will remain and make a significant contribution to our development in the future.”

The Engine Shed is a collaboration between Bristol City Council, the University of Bristol and the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and houses the university’s business incubator SETsquared and Invest Bristol and Bath.

Within a week of opening last December The Engine Shed, was awarded the Business Incubator Design award by industry body UK Business Incubation (UKBI).

Shortlisted for the South West Built Environment award were BAM Construction for the regeneration of the Theatre Royal, AWW inspired environments for the Purifier House and Boat House redevelopment, Kier Construction West and Wales for Torre Abbey restoration and University of Bristol (Capita) for work on the Wills Memorial Library.
