Waste management firm ETM Recycling is to help Ashton Gate achieve its goal of becoming one of the UK’s first zero waste-to-landfill venues after signing a three-year deal with stadium.
ETM, which is investing £4m in a state-of-the-art recycling centre just a stone’s throw from the stadium on its site at Ashton Vale, will handle all Ashton Gate’s waste.
Expected to open next March, the centre will be the South West’s most effective and efficient plant, handling 150,000 tonnes of waste a year.
As well as increasing efficiency, its technology will vastly improve waste segregation, meaning ETM should be able to achieve 98-100% landfill diversion.
Ashton Gate, pictured, home to Bristol City FC and Bristol Bears rugby, has put sustainability high on its agenda and by signing up ETM aims to recycle all waste – from burger wrappers to paper cups.
Ashton Gate managing director Mark Kelly said: “ETM is Ashton Gates key operational partner and over the last four years we have continued to work closely together on the reduction of waste to landfill with an aspiration to get to zero.
“As a company they are always at the forefront of innovation of which the stadium and the local environment benefits from.”
ETM director Amy McCormack added: “Ashton Gate wants to become a zero waste-to-landfill stadium and once our new plant is up and running, they will be able to achieve that.
“The ETM Group has always had a presence at the stadium and, with it being so close to where we operate, it’s the perfect partnership so we are absolutely delighted to have secured this deal.”
Family-run ETM already operates one of the few recycling facilities in Bristol to achieve more than 94% recycling of all waste.
