Housing law expert Paul Butterworth this week took up his new role as a partner in Regional law firm Ashfords’ Bristol-based real estate team.
Paul, whose appointment was announced in June, was previously a senior partner in the property team at Bristol-headquartered national firm TLT.
During just over 15 years at TLT, where he was head of social housing and joint head of the housing sector, he focused on major development projects, including some of the most significant housing schemes in London and the South East.
He was central in developing the firm’s nationally ranked social housing practice and has particular expertise in regeneration, along with extensive knowledge of legal and other issues affecting the sector.
Paul is a Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) South West board member and his work in housing spans nearly 30 years, including heading teams at a local authority and a housing association.
Ashfords’ Bristol office has achieved considerable growth in recent years and now employs around 80 people.
Paul’s appointment follows those of four other high-profile partners – Kate Topp, who joined the real estate team after 11 years at Osborne Clarke, Nicola Manclark, now in the corporate tax team after 10 years at Burges Salmon, Andy Braithwaite, who arrived from Thrings as head of the commercial team, and another ex-TLT partner Neel Mehta, who is in the construction and infrastructure team.
Ashfords partner and head of the Bristol office Chris Dyson said: “Paul’s appointment is aligned to our strategic growth plan and further demonstrates our ongoing commitment to both expand our Bristol office and ensure that we continue to provide the highest levels of expertise and service for our clients.”
Paul added: “I am very happy to be joining such an experienced and highly regarded firm. It’s a great move for me given Ashfords’ high-profile clients both locally and nationally in the property sector.”
Ashfords employs around 500 people across its offices in Bristol, London, Taunton, Tiverton and Plymouth.
