Bristol Airport has become the first in the world to give passengers the chance to order food and drink in its bars and lounges via their smartphones.

Customers can download a free app called QikServe in seconds, place their order and then have their food served at their table – without the hassle of queuing or worrying about leaving their baggage or other valuable items.

The move confirms the airport's reputation for innovation and customer service. It handled 6m passengers last year – making it one of the UK’s fastest-growing airports but putting pressure on its catering facilities.

Bristol Airport retail manager Tom Hack said: “By introducing Qikserve to our busiest food and beverage location, Bar Zero 9, it allows the team to deliver a seamless and stress-free start to the customers’ journey.

“This innovative app, which can be downloaded for free using the airport WiFi service, means customers can select, order and pay for their food and drinks without having to leave their table or wait at the bar.”

QikServe founder Daniel Rodgers said: “We are committed to improving the dining experience for customers by enabling them to overcome service barriers through their smartphone. It’s like having a waiter in your pocket. Customers love the speed, convenience and simplicity. We are delighted to welcome Bristol Airport on board, with many more venues to follow.”

The bars and restaurants at Bristol Airport are operated by food travel specialists SSP. Its operations local site marketing manager, Jackie Smith, said: “This new initiative is just one example of how we can use cutting-edge technology to make the experience of travelling through the airport more enjoyable and less stressful.”

QikServe, based near Edinburgh, says its products, including its app The Waiter in Your Pocket, are set to revolutionise casual dining worldwide.
