Bristol Airport’s only on-site hotel has added 50 more bedrooms to meet growing demand for overnight stays as the airport itself continues its expansion.
The Hampton by Hilton hotel opened with 201 bedrooms in 2017 – a year when the airport handled 8m passengers a year for the first time in its history.
That number has now soared to just over 10m passengers, with this summer already the airport’s busiest ever.
The airport is now running at full capacity while its biggest capital project for more than two decades takes place to increase capacity to 12m passengers a year.
Hampton by Hilton bosses said the airport’s growth meant the hotel, which is just a few minutes’ walk from the terminal, was set to have its busiest period so.
It was originally built using an innovative construction technique, with steel modular segments made in a factory in China – including whole room sets – shipped over and assembled on site.
All the new bedrooms were made from prefabricated shipping containers by Polish firm DMD Modular in Poland and arrived on site earlier pre-assembled with wardrobes, cupboards, desks and bathrooms.
Forty-eight of the 50 new bedrooms have super-king beds, new for the hotel, and all have SMEG kettles and fridges and 55-inch TVs.
Hampton by Hilton hotel general manager Andrew Peacock, pictured above, second left, with some of the hotel’s staff, said the new bedrooms also showcased a new design.
“This additional part of the hotel offers ‘super king flex’ rooms with the option of a king size bed – ideal for those who want to treat themselves to a bigger bed – or two single beds, which are perfect for friends who want to share a room.”
Bristol Airport commercial director Rupert Lawrie added: “Having recently celebrated 10m customers travelling through the terminal in a consecutive 12-month period, it is great news that the Hampton by Hilton is able to accommodate even more customers, offering the added convenience and comfort of being the only hotel based the airport.”
The hotel also has two meeting rooms, a gym, lounge area and food and drink facilities.
Bristol Airport officially opened in 1957 as Bristol (Lulsgate) and handled 33,000 passengers in its first year.
On its busiest day this year more than 40,000 people passed through the terminal over a 24-hour period.
A raft of new routes have been added to its departure board this year – including popular sunshine holiday destinations - while its busiest airlines, including easyJet and Jet2, have also increased the frequency of some popular routes.
Hilton pioneered the concept of the airport hotel – with its first opening at San Francisco in 1959. It now has more 400 airports hotels across the world.
