An associate family solicitor at Bristol law firm Barcan+Kirby has been recognised for his work representing children in law proceedings.
Jeremy Fagan, who works in the firm’s care team in its Bedminster office, has received the Children Law Accreditation from the Law Society.
To achieve this recognised quality standard, Jeremy, pictured, attended a mandatory three-day course and then a separate interview with a lawyer and children’s guardian about his experience and application of the law against a case study.
Barcan+Kirby described Jeremy’s achievement as fantastic, particularly as the Bristol childcare proceedings scene is very limited on male children panel lawyers.
Jeremy, who joined the firm in February, said: “This is something I have wanted to achieve in my career and is a big part of moving into private practice.
“I am very grateful for Barcan+Kirby giving me this opportunity in my first six months with the firm.”
Jeremy specialised in care proceedings since before he qualified as a solicitor in 2013 and has in-depth knowledge of the pre-proceedings process and care proceedings.
Prior to joining Barcan+Kirby he worked in-house in a local authority legal department.
Candidates for the Children Law Accreditation must have personally conducted cases and represented parties in children proceedings, carried out advocacy for clients and have a thorough awareness of ethical issues that can arise in children cases.
They must also have an up-to-date knowledge of guidance, legislation, case law and practice developments and the ability to work directly with children, explore their competence and understand their wishes and feelings.
Barcan+Kirby supplies a comprehensive range of legal services ranging from corporate & commercial and employment to family and medical negligence from its five offices across Bristol and South Gloucestershire.
