Bristol-based sustainable UK banking group Triodos has appointed Mark Clayton as chief operating officer in a move it said would be instrumental in driving forward its mission and operations.

The bank, which has operated in the UK for nearly 30 years, also said Mark’s experience and “dedication to values-driven banking” would ensure it continued to lead the way in sustainable finance, supporting businesses and organisations that were committed to making a positive impact on society and the environment.

In his new role at Triodos, Mark, pictured, will oversee customer operations and financial crime, large project implementation, facilities management and ICT services.

Before joining Triodos, he most recently spent four years as COO at Unity Trust Bank which, like Triodos, is a member of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values (GABV).

Prior to that he had a 23-year career at HSBC, joining as an executive trainee and going on to hold various senior roles and lead large teams in its retail banking division.

Notably, he was head of HSBC’s premier distribution, where he spearheaded the strategic growth of the retail premier and international business.

Triodos Bank UK CEO Bevis Watts said: “Mark has shown a great understanding of this business, our customers and the opportunities for growth.

“We feel he is a great fit and the right person to shape the future of operations at Triodos Bank UK.

“We have big ambitions for our organisation, and I’m confident that Mark’s knowledge will be instrumental for our success in the rapidly changing banking landscape.”

Mark added: “Having transitioned away from the mainstream banking  sector a few years ago, I’ve found fulfilment in roles where values steer decision-making.

“I look forward to leveraging Triodos’ influential platform to drive meaningful change through sustainable banking practices.”

Triodos has banking activities in the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and Germany as well as the UK, where it employs around 200 staff in Bristol, London and Edinburgh
