Conservation and education charity Bristol Zoological Society has chosen Grundon as its waste management partner as it continues to develop a new, world-class zoo on the city’s outskirts.

The three-year contract on the Bristol Zoo Project near Cribbs Causeway includes waste management and recycling services in anticipation of a significant increase in footfall.

Grundon, which has a strong track record in working with visitor attractions, has said it will act as a ‘sustainability partner’ to the Society, coming up with ideas to make its waste management more effective and increasing recycling.

Bristol Zoological Society previously ran Bristol Zoo Gardens near Clifton Downs for nearly two centuries.

Following the closure and sale of the 12-acre site in 2022 and has moved its staff and animals to the Wild Place Project, the 40-acre area north of the city it had previously operated as a wildlife conservation park for seven years.

The site, which was already home to animals including giraffes, bears, wolves and zebras, has the potential to expand to 136 acres.

Grundon regional sales manager Daniel Peacey, pictured above, centre, with Bristol Zoological Society director of estates Jonathan Timney and facilities assistant Harry Perrinsaid it was great to be working with such a high-profile Bristol organisation.

“The zoo will be a key client for us, and we’ll be bringing our full suite of services to them as they develop,” he added.

“Reporting is a big thing – we’ll be helping them identify potential improvements with detailed analysis of their various waste streams and providing suggestions on how they can continue to generate even better recycling figures.

“Essentially, we’re looking to be a sustainability partner, not just a provider of services.”

Grundon’s services will be provided in a phased approach, starting with more than 60 bins for mixed recycling compostable packaging and other waste around the site, alongside larger 1,100-litre bins in its service yard.

Two bins will be provided for the Society’s head offices in Hollywood Mansion House next door, where Grundon will also provide confidential shredding services.

Bristol Zoological Society director of estates Jonathan Timney said: “Bristol Zoological Society is excited to be working in partnership with Grundon to ensure recycling and waste needs are met across our organisation.

“Grundon were selected as our waste management provider after a rigorous selection process.

“We believe Grundon will provide the insight and expert advice needed to enhance our recycling efforts and identify further improvements that support and reflect our worldwide conservation efforts, contributing to our mission of Saving Wildlife Together.”

Berkshire-headquartered Grundon, which was founded in 1929, works with customers across the South of England to provide a total waste management service for the reduction, reuse, recycling, recovering and disposal of waste.

Since launching in Bristol, it has opened a depot in St Philips and introduced a £300,000 state-of-the-art electric collection vehicle.

It also manages waste streams at a number of major events and sporting occasions, including Royal Ascot and the British Grand Prix, as well as sporting clubs such as Forest Green Rovers and Gloucestershire Cricket Club.

Earlier this year Bristol immersive visitor attraction Wake The Tiger appointed Grundon as its waste management partner following its expansion.
