Plans for a £11m green business park in South Bristol which could become a base for more than 100 fledgling environmental technology firms have been drawn up.

The site, on the derelict site of Bristol’s original airport in Whitchurch, is owned by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA). It has remained undeveloped since 1956 when the airport closed.

The business park, which would be served by the Bus Rapid Transit network, will be aimed at businesses that focus on environmental technologies and green goods and services. It is hoped up to 120 firms will move to the site.

The scheme goes before Bristol City Council’s Cabinet next week. Cllr Anthony Negus, Cabinet member for planning, property and regeneration, said: “This is excellent news for jobs and investment in the South Bristol area, and will help unlock this crucial development site. Bristol has a thriving environmental technology sector with big potential to grow further. The new green business park will therefore provide the necessary infrastructure to help support the sector’s growth.”

Funding is being sought through the European Regional Development Fund and the West of England’s Regional Growth Fund allocation from the Government. It is expected to be a condition of European funding that the development should be completed and operational by 2015.
