The former Lord Mayor of Bristol Cllr Geoff Gollop has been selected as the Conservative candidate for Bristol elected mayor ballot later this year.
Party members chose the accountant and Westbury-on-Trym councillor at a hustings in the ward last night. Cllr Gollop beat Tory group leader Peter Abraham and former city councillor Barbara Lewis in a three-way vote.
Speaking to the BBC, Cllr Gollop, 
, said he would fight his campaign on transport and education, while making a special reference to the scandal of inequality in the city.
“It is appalling that some of the country’s poorest 1% live within the city’s boundaries,” he said.
Mr Gollop runs his own chartered accountancy firm Geoff Gollop and Co. His selection means that all the main parties now have their candidates in place for the November 15 ballot.
Labour has selected Marvin Rees, an NHS programme manager and former BBC Radio reporter, while Bristol’s ruling Liberal Democrats last week chose deputy council Jon Rogers as their candidate. Daniella Radice will fight for the city’s Green Party.
Others to have put their names forward are: George Ferguson, Independent; Paulette North, Respect Party; Craig Clarke, State Educated Party; Tim Collins, Independent; Spud Murphy, Independent; Andy Thorne, Independent; Eric Mutch (Mr Corrupt Self-Serving Thieving Lying B’Stard), Independent.
With less than 100 days to go before Bristol goes to the polls, nearly half of households across the city have yet to register to vote.
