Construction firm Beard has bolstered its leadership team in Bristol with the appointment of Matt Cooper as director to lead its operations in the area.

The appointment follows a period of strong growth for Beard, which has worked on several high-profile projects in and around Bristol.

These include cutting-edge training facilities for Bristol City FC and Bristol Bears, the refurbishment of a landmark site on Baldwin Street in the city centre and new toll houses for Clifton Suspension Bridge.

It is currently working on a £3.8m transformation of the Grade II* listed Royal West of England Academy (RWA) building on Whiteladies Road.

Matt, pictured, who joins Swindon-headquartered Beard after nine years at regional building contractor Bray & Slaughter, said Beard was known in the industry for its laser focus on quality, financial stability and good relationships with suppliers and sub-contractors.

He said: “This is a great opportunity to build upon the great work that has been achieved here and continue to deliver exciting projects across education, healthcare and leisure sectors, where Beard has excelled in recent years.

“As somebody from Bristol, it’s a great position to be working for a firm that aims to make a positive impact on the communities where they work and create inspiring spaces to live, work and play.”

The appointment comes after previous Bristol director Mike Hedges moved into a wider regional role, taking responsibility for Beard’s Bristol, Swindon and Guildford offices.

Beard chairman Mark Beard said: “Matt’s extensive industry experience and insight will be a real asset for Beard, he is a great addition to the leadership team and the business more widely.

“Bristol and the surrounding region is an area with tremendous opportunities in sectors where Beard has specialised in and built a reputation for prompt and faultless delivery.

“With Matt’s appointment we anticipate renewed focus on expanding in these markets and developing new areas.”

Beard, which has a £160m annual turnover, undertakes design and build, new build, restoration and refurbishment on a range of projects, including complex projects for public and private sector organisations across the South of England.

Established in 1892, the family-owned company has significant expertise in building for the healthcare, arts and culture, commerce and industry, education, religious buildings, elderly care, sports and leisure and defence sectors.

It opened its Bristol office in 2015.
