Bristol architects will be offering their expertise to homeowners on everything from house extensions to self-build properties in return for a small charity donation at the city’s Architecture Centre this weekend.
The informal half-hour consultations are being held tomorrow and Sunday between 1pm and 4.30pm at the Harbourside centre. Each session is taken by a member of RIBA (the Royal Institute of British Architects) who can offer creativity and professional advice to help bring ideas to life, whether it is inspiration for a study, an extra bedroom, better living space or a whole new-build project.
The Architecture Centre wants Bristol’s homeowners to get the most out of their property in the light of recent research by the Economic and Social Research Council which exposed the UK as ‘a nation of frustrated, unfulfilled house-movers’.
Centre manager Christine Davis said: “This is a great opportunity for residents from all over Bristol to get some sound professional advice about home improvements they’re planning.
“Renovating your home can be far cheaper than moving house – it’s something people are really looking into as a result of the stagnant property market. It’s rare to be able to provide access to RIBA architects for so modest a donation – we’re hoping lots of people will come and see us.”
All architects taking part hold full professional indemnity insurance and are up to date on the latest legislation and technical innovations.
The suggested donation for these consultations is £10 which will go to the Architecture Centre (a registered charity) and the Bristol Society of Architects (BSA).

Visitors to the Architecture Centre will also get a chance to view the exhibition 21st Century Living. Presented by the Bristol and Bath branch of RIBA and BSA, this exhibition, which runs until May 3, features the work of local architects focusing on contemporary attitudes to house and home.
